The Winged Victory of Samothrace (Nike) statue was discovered on the island of Samothrace in 1863 by Charles Champoiseau, the French Consul to Adrianople. It is said to have been left abandoned under a blue ceiling in a room above the ruins of the Great Temple. It was reportedly created between 336 and 282 B.C. to commemorate a naval victory by King Demetrius I of Macedonia. The Nike statue currently housed in our Formworks collection is a re-creation possessing the exact same material, weight, form, and color as the original. It was produced as a true replica, which distinctly sets it apart from simple reproductions.
